world day of prayer for vocations
may 11
The Vatican has set the 51st World Day of Prayer for Vocations for May 11, the Fourth Sunday of Easter, commonly known as Good Shepherd Sunday. The theme for this year’s celebration, which falls on Mother’s Day this year, is “Vocations, Witness to the Truth.”

Pope Francis, in a statement for the occasion said that “No vocation is born of itself or lives for itself. A vocation flows from the heart of God and blossoms in the good soil of faithful people, in the experience of fraternal love.”

Please visit the World Day of Prayer for Vocations website www.worlddayofprayerforvocations.com/  for more information and to plan to make this part of your lesson plans for the Friday before or the Monday after!

Tuition and costs
As reported by the NCEA, “Tuition fees paid by families constitute a portion of the actual per pupil expenses. The average per pupil tuition in parish elementary schools is $3,880 (national average) which is approximately 66.4% of actual costs per pupil of $5,847 880 (national average). About 93.9% of elementary schools provide some form of tuition assistance.

The average public school per pupil cost of $12,054, as reported by the National Center for Education Statistics, includes both elementary and secondary schools.

Based on the public schools cost, Catholic schools provide almost 24 billion dollars a year savings for the nation.

Catholic School Trend Data

U. S. Catholic school enrollment reached its peak during the early 1960s when there were more than 5.2 million students in almost thirteen thousand schools across the nation. The 1970s and 1980s saw a steep decline in both the number of schools and students. By 1990, there were approximately 2.5 million students in 8,719 schools. From the mid-1990s though 2000, there was a steady enrollment increase (1.3%) despite continued closings of schools.

Between the 2004 and the 2014 school years, 1,856 schools were reported closed or consolidated (23.2%). The number of students declined by 578,699 (22.7%). The most seriously impacted have been elementary schools.

"Only in Christ can men and women find answers to the ultimate questions that trouble them. Only in Christ can they fully understand their dignity as persons created and loved by God. Jesus Christ is "the only Son from the Father…full of grace and truth."
John Paul II. World Youth Day, 1993.

Kim's New Office (New Phone/Health Room)
I'm officially moved (much earlier than was expected) to my new office space!  YEA! Thanks to our 8th graders for taking out the ugly counter, Dan and Lenny for painting and Theresa Bruno for making the connection for donated furniture, I now have a larger space to meet with you and parents but most importantly, we now have a Health room for students in the office.  A few teachers also requested a place to have a private conversation on the phone so this space is also designed this purpose as well.

Just so we are on the same page, I am getting a blind for the window but until that point, I wanted to share with you what my "system" is for availability.  If the door is open, PLEASE feel free to come in if you need me.  :) If the door is closed, I am in a private meeting, on a phone call or am tied up in some other way.  Please just stop back by or leave a note in my box in Dawn's office and I'll come see you ASAP.

Mrs. Schindler's Bubble Gum Machine
I have a NEW bubble gum machine in my office!  If you would like to honor one of your students with a trip to Mrs. Schindler's office for a piece of bubble gum for good behavior, good grades, etc. and are good with them continuing to chew it in your class, please send them down with a note from you telling me why they are receiving this honor!   Please remind them if my door is closed they will need to come back at a later time!

2014-2015 School Year Dates to Put on Your Calendar Now

We wanted to get you some dates to be able to start planning for next year!  We are really excited about next year!  A few things you will see that may look a little different for the 2014-2015 school year are:

-  We are combining our Ice Cream Social and our Back to School Night into ONE NIGHT- our goal is to get information to families BEFORE school starts so our students and families are able to hit the road running for a successful year. Please see the schedule below.

-  The second piece we are implementing is assessment (testing) days.  This is a very common practice in other schools and allows for students and teachers to get to know each other both personally and educationally! 6th-8th Grade students will have group testing, as noted below, but Preschool-5th Grade students will have a special one-on-one time with their teachers that parents will sign up for between August 4 and August 11.  We will also have pay-based extended care available for families if needed on these assessment days.
