What Do Teachers Do ALL Day?
I found this GREAT article confirming how important your job is!  Hope you enjoy this as much as I did!  What Teachers Do... Thank you for the gift you are to our children!

Lent Preparation
  • We hope that enjoyed your Lenten retreat at Sacred Heart Retreat Center.  This was a gift from our school so please let Kim know if you would like to see our staff have another event of this nature next year for our Lenten retreat.
  • Maureen has come around with purple cloth for your crucifixes.  Please cover your crucifixes and MAKE SURE you have a crucifix over your front white board.  Please let Dan know if you need help with this.
  • Please make sure to prepare your room and especially your prayer tables for a Lenten focus.  There are some great ideas in this week's Colt Express.
  • Also, as a reminder, we are beginning our Stations of the Cross on Monday.  We will run an AM assembly schedule on Mondays and Fridays during Lent for stations so all teachers need to be in the gym at 7:40 AM each Monday and Friday AM.

NEXT Observation Focus
Prior to our AdvancEd team coming on March 17 and 18, we will be focusing your observation next week on your classroom environment.  How "Catholic" is your classroom?  Is it tidy, neat and well organized?  We will be giving our feedback on ways to improve your classroom environment so preparing your room for "company" ahead of time is a great idea!

Looking for GREAT online Games and Activities for your Students?
Do you have a COMPUTER Math and Reading station set up for when you are doing Guided Reading?  Here is a whole list of ONLINE games for your students! Check this out:  Best Online Learning Games

Students Coming to the Office
We have numerous students coming to the office to:
  • Make phone calls
  • Repeatedly telling us they are sick
  • Calling to get homework from parents
As a reminder, students are NOT to come the office without a BLUE pass.  We need to know YOU know they are there.  Students will from this point forward be sent back to the classroom without this slip.  Also, we have some students who are repeatedly sent to the office telling us they are sick. You know who your frequent flyers are.  If we have repeatedly sent them back to you - please call down before sending them to the office.

Are You Curious How Education is Moving in the 21st Century?
Ponder this:

Recess/Lunch Duty
We are so thankful that we have our dear Deidre handling our lunch duties. Please note - we are still responsible for having at least 2 adults with students at all times!  Nichole does have a volunteer scheduled EVERY day but things do happen and sometimes we do not get a call that they are not able to be here or are going to be late.  If she gets a call - she let's you know immediately.

We understand how inconvenient this is and work to make sure we have coverage.  PLEASE know we do need teachers to fill in if this happens.  We have no other staff members available to help with this.  A good rule of thumb should be:
  • You each take your own class or grade level to recess.
  • You wait until Deirdre is there to hand them off. Please do not leave them with a volunteer.
  • You see no other adult is there with Deirdre - please stay until they arrive or create a plan quickly with your team to ensure coverage and a break for all.
  • One of you - call the office and ask if we have news from the volunteer so you can plan for this time.
Thank you for your understanding of this and know we work to give you a duty free lunch but we all have to pitch in when the need arises to protect our students!

Fluency Fix!
Have you tried everything you can think of to help your kiddos that are struggling with comprehension?  Experts have discovered that there is a direct correlation to comprehension and fluency!  Try this out to build fluency for your struggling students:  Fluency Fix

New Folder System in Front Office
As we have numerous things that are dropped off in the front office daily, we have created a system in the folder in which lesson plans used to go for things brought to school from parents or other individuals, ie., permission slips, etc.  Please regularly come to the office to check these folders so you can gather what we may have for you.  We hope this gets important "stuff" to you more quickly.  Obviously, students will continue to be called for lunches so no worries on this!

Last Week's Lock-Out
Our administration team reviewed last week's lock-out which was GREAT learning for all of us.  Here are a few questions, thoughts and responses:
  • Should we not have gone to an official lock-down?  - Yes, we have come to a decision that if we are calling 911 - we will simultaneously go to a Lock-down.  I do, however, appreciate Mrs. Degenhart coming around to lock doors as she realized the situation was escalating. If this were to happen again - please take any teacher's lead that comes to you and do as they say - ask questions later.
  • How do you answer questions for students about what is going on, police cars, etc.?  - I would ask that you think in terms of how you would answer your own children if they were scared and did not understand while keeping confidentiality.  You would explain that everything is ok and the police are here to take care of us.  Please do not create more alarm but simply answer them at their own level.
  • A suggestion for a "code word" if teachers come to the office and need to leave. Thoughts?

AdvancEd Planning Meeting and Needed Documents
Just a reminder that we will have an AdvancEd planning meeting on Wednesday, March 12
from 3-5 PM. We will be going through the Accreditation report we sent in and go over the logistics for March 17 and 18.  This is a mandatory meeting as we all need to be on the same page!  :)

Also, we are still in need of a few UP TO DATE Class Schedules and Procedures/Rules for EVERY class.  Please email or print me a copy of your current schedule and give it to Kim.  We will be sharing these with the team so they know where they can find you and what you will be doing the two days they are here.

Here's a GREAT website for Catholic Teacher Resources that Ms. Gonzales found!
I have not heard from anyone on this!  Please - check out at http://catholicteacherresources.com - take the "tour" then let me know what you think! If we are interested, we can do an HSA grant for the $295 yearly fee if you all believe it would be beneficial!
